The general aims of Dormers Wells Junior School are:

Homelearning policy

Things you can do at home to help your child

It is our policy to set homework for all children to do. No child should spend longer than 60 minutes to do their homework. However we do feel that time spent on activities and games with you as parents is just as important as homework. There are many board games with an educational value such as Ludo, Connect 4, Frustration, or Monopoly and Scrabble. Visits and trips out also help children to develop their general knowledge as well watching some television programmes. It would help if you could watch television together and talk about it afterwards.

There will be occasions during the year when homework is not set (such as when a class has a special activity like an assembly to do for the whole school) but this should not happen often.

Reading

As well as other homework we like the children to read every night for between 10 and 30 minutes. All children have a special Reading Record Book that should be signed each evening by an adult to show what pages have been read. Parents are the best people to do this. Often there is room for a comment too. Please take time to hear your child read aloud and/or discuss their book with them. Reading books should be brought back into school every day.

Mathematics and Language including Written work

We ask the children to learn their number bonds, multiplication tables and some spellings weekly.

Work is set weekly in each year group for maths and language. All children are expected to complete a piece of free writing each week. It is important that all school books are returned to school, as we have to charge for lost or damaged books.

Please sign the homework that is done by your child, you can also make comments about what your child has done if you think this would be helpful.

Other subjects

The children may also be asked to do work from other lessons as the need arises or to research a topic. This will not happen every week. Sometimes a visit to the library may be necessary, or some questions for research may need to be answered.

Help and Support

The most important part of homework is the part that parents play. You are the best people to help and encourage your children. You need to make sure that homework is done at a sensible time by your child in a suitable quiet place, on a table, away from things that could make their books messy and out of the reach of smaller children. They will need a waterproof bag to carry their books. We sell suitable bags in school.

Children in the oldest year group: Year 6 are elected to be prefects. They have jobs to do around the school to help the staff they wear special badges to show that they are prefects. They can also be called upon by other children to help if they have a problem.
