Some useful information
CHILD WELFARE / HOME VISITS
Sometimes a child can experience difficulties, which may affect their school work, or even their attendance. In such cases the school may call on the Local Education Welfare Officer who will then visit the child's home to offer assistance.
CLUBS and EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Various clubs and extra-curricular activities are offered as a result of teachers giving up their own time and offering the children their expertise. These include activities from athletics to first aid. We also have musical events as well as special assemblies that we invite the parents to during the school year.
FREE MEALS
Some children may qualify for free school meals. If parents think that this applies to them you need to ask in the school office for the relevant forms.
HOLIDAYS
Parents are not encouraged to take their children out of school for holidays. Permission can be granted in exceptional circumstances to allow a family holiday for up to two weeks. If you want to take your child out of school you need to complete our holiday application form, giving us details of the dates, destinations and the reason for the absence. Sometimes we will also ask that some school work is taken along during the absence.
HOMEWORK
There is a system of homework that increases the amount of work done in each year. All the pupils are expected to read regularly, there is a reading record book for parents to record when their child has read. Pupils are also expected to complete a piece of maths and a piece of literacy work each week. Children are given work to be completed over a period of at least 2 nights. Parents are expected to ensure that the children have time and space to complete their homework.
ILLNESS
Please do not send a sick child to school. There is a medical room and we have trained First Aiders to help the children. If your child becomes sick or injured during the school day we will make every effort to contact you. In extreme circumstances we will call an ambulance to take the child to 'casualty' in the local hospital.
When a child is absent, or is to be excused from PE or Games, a written note or a telephone call from parents is essential. If a child is required to leave the school during the school day for any reason the parents should send in a note and collect the child and sign them out from the school office. The child must report to the office both on leaving and returning to the school for safety reasons.
INSURANCE
The school provides accident insurance cover for all those involved in school activities regardless of whether they are on the school premises. Details of the cover are available from the school office.
LOST PROPERTY
Lost property items are taken to the medical room where they are stored for up to half a term. Every effort will be made to recover any items that are lost but the school accepts no responsibility for any loss. We ask all parents to ensure that their child does not bring valuable items to school and that their uniform is clearly marked with their name.
MATERIALS & PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
The school provides books, materials and equipment. It is expected that pupils will want to provide their own fountain or roller pen, pencil, 30 cm. ruler, rubber, jotter, pencil crayons and basic maths kit. Parents will be expected to reimburse the school for lost or damaged books or equipment. School approved pens and other items are available from the school's own shop at very reasonable cost, as well as books from the school's book shop.
PARENT CONCERNS
If a parent has any concerns about their child they should contact the school as soon as possible before a problem is allowed to escalate. In the first instance parents should arrange to talk with their child's class teacher. All class teachers are available to talk with parents after 3.20 p.m.. The Headteacher is also available if needed and meetings can be arranged.
