Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC)

At the heart of everything we do at DWJS, is providing for pupils Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development.  SMSC is woven through our curriculum, our assesmbly plan and a wide range of other activities.  Our learning page provides more information about SMSC and how our activities support the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes that children need for life in modern Britain.

Spiritual: Spiritual development is about the opportunities we provide for pupils to reflect on their beliefs about life and express their fascination and curiosity about the world around them.  It includes exploring about life's important questions and being interested and showing respect for the beliefs, values and feelings of others.

Moral: Moral development is about pupils being able to recognise right from wrong, and understand that their behaviour and actions have consequences.  It is also about exploring and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues, and appreciating the viewpoints that others have.

Social: Social development is about pupils using their range of skills to work and socialise with others, including those from a different religious, ethnic and socio-economical backgrounds.  It involves cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts.  Social development also includes pupil's engagement with fundamental British Values.

Cultural: Cultural development involves pupils enjoying a wide range of artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities in school and elsewhere.  It is also about improving their understanding and respect for difference and diversity in local, national and global communities.
